Issue: The wind buffeting on my 2008 KLR650 was unbearable at speeds over 90 kph (55mph).  So bad at times that I was sure  my contacts were going to rattle off my eyes.  After trying the laminar lip for the KLR650 stock windshield and the KLR650 tall windshield form KLR650.com I ended up back where I started with the stock windshield and blurry vision.  I expended far too much energy, time and money trying to resolve the buffeting.  I had all but given up when I found a post about KLRDash.com, then it hit me.  What if I combined the KLRDash with the KLR650 tall windshield?  It worked! FYI, I’m 6’1″ and 175 lbs. (Click here to learn more about the KLR650 Dash Modification)

Solution: The first thing I tried was the Laminar Lip for the stock KLR windshield but I was terribly disappointed.  It directed the wind to my chin then the wind buffeting became violent at times.  I couldn’t spend time on the highway, it was far too uncomfortable.  My next attempt was using the KLR650 tall windshield from KLR650.com.  It helped for speeds under 100 km/h (60 mph) but directed the wind to my visor at speeds over 100 kph. One thing to note, the angle of tall windshield (without the KLRDash) caused a few safety concerns. Firstly, the windshield was very close to my chin/chest area and in the event of an abrupt stop or hit from behind I’m sure the windshield would have injured my neck or throat. Secondly, the proximity to my chin/chest left me little room to stand on the foot pegs when riding off-road.  It definitely compromised my riding position and limited my range of motion.

Now that I’ve installed the KLR650 tall windshield in combination with the KLRDash my

buffeting issues are gone (at all speeds) and the related safety concerns have dissipated.  The windshield now sits on an angle that deflects the wind over my helmet and allows adequate room for me to stand on the foot pegs while navigating the dirt trails.   I highly recommend this solution for all riders over 6′ tall.  Here are the two accessories you’ll need: KLR650 tall windshield, KLRDash.

Notes:

  • The Tall windshield comes with a vent to help reduce air turbulence.  Once installed with the KLRDash the vent is at an awkward angle and depending on your speed can create wind related discomfort.  I’ve completely covered the vent and eliminated the issue.
  • When installed with the KLRDash the tall windshield requires additional support to help with stability.  I used the KLRDash Plate (on a 90 degree angle) as the windshield support.
  • I don’t like the look fo the tall windshield on my KLR.  My favorite is the Zero Gravity but I had to choose function over fashion.

Feel free to post comments or leave question.  Stay obsessed my friends.
