KLR650 Dash Modification

Issue: The wind buffeting on my 2008 KLR650 was unbearable at speeds over 90 kph (55 mph).  So bad at times that I was sure  my contacts were going to rattle off my eyes.  After trying the laminar lip for the KLR650 stock windshield and the KLR650 tall windshield form KLR650.com I ended up back where I started with the stock windshield and blurry vision.  I expended far too much energy, time and money trying to resolve the buffeting and I had all but given up when I found a post about KLRDash.com on ADVRider.com.  FYI, I’m 6’1″ and 175 lbs.

Solution: (see video below)The KLR650 dash plate and riser from KLRDash.com in combination with the KLRDash-KLR650-GreenKLR650 tall windshield from KLR650.com solved the buffeting issue and elevated my riding enjoyment.  I now cruise comfortably at 120 kph (75 mph) on my commute home with little to no buffeting or noise disturbance now that the airflow passes directly over my helmet.  Prior to the KLR Dash modification I required frequent breaks to regain my vision and ease my headache.  I now experience little fatigue related to buffeting and can ride for hours without interruption.

I believe the KLR650 dash plate and riser was originally designed to accommodate GPS mounts and other toys. I’m sure it does a superb job at that but that wasn’t my intention.  I wanted to solve the buffeting, it did the job and it looks good too.  I wasn’t thinking of the esthetic benefits but it completely changed the look of the front end, giving it a unique stance.  It looks great!  I highly recommend the dash plate and risers, at approximately $75 +taxes and shipping, it is great value for your dollar.

Notes:

  • The ordering process from KLRDash.com was seemless and the communication was excellent throughout the entire process.
  • The dash plate required minor modification to fit and support the KLR650 tall windshield.  I ended up incorporating a 90 degree bend in the dash plate so it now sits almost flat and it now acts as a support for the windshield.

Feel free to post comments or leave question.  Stay obsessed my friends.
